I really admire how you work with aspects of photography alongside that of other practices and disciplines like paintings and sculptures, and I think that this has affected the way you curated this exhibition. How did this come to fruition? It’s been really interesting working with the photographic image, because focusing on things to do with the camera really allowed me to hone in on the idea of the gaze. In regards to the exhibition, I couldn’t just curate it about the Black woman and how she has been represented in visual culture. So, one of the central aims of the curatorial choices was looking at how these women see themselves and each other. All the artists in the exhibition are Black female or non binary, so there’s also an intentional curatorial choice to move away from the traditional white male gaze (which has previously captured Black women). The exhibition is envisioning what the legacy of the Black woman would look like if she was in control of that legacy herself. Using photography has been really interesting from that point of view, because it is such a direct way of portraying our image out into the world. For example, we all use photography in our day-to-day lives to portray ourselves, whether it’s on social media or in our family photographs. So in terms of the exhibition, it’s been really enjoyable figuring out and seeing the different ways that Black women view each other, themselves, and their changing portrayal throughout history. The show spans many decades of creation and ideas.
Another spirited television event comes courtesy of The CW: Taye Diggs, Ne-Yo, and Eric Bellinger front the song-and-dance special The Black Pack: Excellence, which folds into its commemoration of Juneteenth a special tribute to iconic Black performers like Sammy Davis Jr. Photography plays a critical role in the reiteration of stereotypes and visual tropes that go down in history becoming part of the collective imagination. This is the premise from which the exhibition BLACK VENUS, on display at Fotografiska New York through August 28, originates. The show takes a deep dive into the historical representation of Black women with key themes including the fetishization of the Black female body and the investigation of how Black women can and are reclaiming their agency. These messages are portrayed through the array of archival images dated between 1793 to 1930, alongside more than thirty contemporary artworks made between 1975 to the present day. British-born Aindrea Emelife, who conceived and curated the exhibition, chose to feature numerous Black artists, among them Zanele Muholi, Renee Cox, Coreen Simpson, Carrie Mae Weams, Deana Lawson, and our PhotoVogue spotlight artist Amber Pinkerton, the youngest featured in the show. The exhibition invites audiences to learn, unlearn, and engross with the racial and sexual objectification and continual struggle that Black women have and continue to experience while also admiring the ongoing challenge of that stereotype. Since Black women are finally assuming positions of power, being featured on runways, magazine covers, and making their way into many different industries, Emelife felt that it was time to look back and appreciate how far Black women have come, and to look towards the future.
